2018 Outlook Conference at Cornell

29 Jan, 2018

Last week I had the pleasure to attend and present my research activities during the 2018 Agricultural And Food Business Outlook conference at Cornell University.

The event was organized by Dyson School Of Applied Economics And Management And Johnson College Of Business and held last January 22 at Cornell University. It is one of the most important and oldest conferences on the current situation and outlook for the national economy in New York State and USA. The first edition was in the early 1900s, and since the faculty members have been interested in businesses in the agricultural and food industries. One of the aims of this event is to meet farmers, producers, and stakeholders of the food industry in order to engage them in problem-solving.

In the morning session Associate Professor Steve Kyle gave an overview about the “Current Situation and Outlook for the National Economy”, followed by a presentation on “Economic Characteristics of the NY/NE Agriculture and Food Sector” given by Assistant Professor Jennifer Ifft.

John Bovay, Assistant Professor, Dept of Ag & Resource Economics, University of Connecticut

In the afternoon session, two parallel sessions were presented. The first one on dairy products and the second one on Fruit, Vegetable and other current issues in the food system. In particular, Associate Professor Brad Rickard illustrated the current Situation and Outlook for Fruits and Vegetables in the US; Research Associate Jie Li spoke about the situation of grape and nursery and Assistant Professor John Bovay, Implications of the Food Safety Modernization Act Product Safety Rule.

Finally, I gave a talk about Geographical Indications in the Wine and Food Sector with an overview of the current legislative framework in EU, different approaches of protection, some case studies of Italian sounding and counterfeiting.
